Studies Show Health Benefits of Tai Chi

A recent paper published in The British Journal of Sports Medicine performed a systematic review of 33 studies of the health benefits of Tai Chi on chronic illnesses. The paper clearly indicates health benefits of Tai Chi on such conditions as heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This accords with a paper I wrote for a course two years ago which looked at a multitude of studies to determine which purported health benefits of Tai Chi were actually supported by scientific studies. reports:
“After reviewing the data from 33 studies, the researchers concluded that Tai Chi provided at least some benefit for all of these conditions. All saw improvements in strength, balance, and posture, for example, without adverse side effects such as increased pain or breathlessness. In those with arthritis, it helped reduce arthritic-specific symptoms like pain and stiffness. Most of the studies involved doing one-hour Tai Chi sessions two or three times a week for about 12 weeks.”

    I sometime hear people say that so and so has done Tai Chi for so many years and yet has come down with a certain sickness. I have
    always been lost in finding an answer to that. But to-day the
    answer has come. I now realize that Tai Chi etc. will not stop us
    from being ill at times, but without it, we can definitely be worse.
    It is the nurturing and promoting of health that gives us its greatest
    benefits. It has kept me healthy, healthier should I say, and I could
    be weaker in many ways without it.
